Pneumatic automation technology is perfect for process industries: it is robust, inexpensive and very reliable. Compressed air can be transported and stored easily and, in contrast to electricity, is simple to control. Higher thrust and tensile forces and torque values can be achieved by boosting the pressure.
With an average service life of more than 1 million operating cycles, pneumatic actuators will outlive any process valve. Even in the harsh environments often found in process industries, with large temperature fluctuations and high levels of dirt and humidity.
Humidity, extreme heat or cold cannot stop corrosion-protected pneumatic components – they are unaffected by temperatures between -20 and +80°C, while special low-temperature variants can even operate down to -40°C and high-temperature variants up to +150°C. All stainless-steel component variants are extremely resistant to corrosion.
A powerful performer
Heavy-duty quarter turn actuator DFPD-HD controls large volumes of media
Desiged in accordance with the scotch-yoke principle, the quarter turn actuator DFPD-HD is exceptionally reliable. With torque ratings until 32,000 Nm, it guarantees reliable control of high-volume media flows. It is ideal for the automation of large ball valves, butterfly valves and air dampers used in power plants and the chemical industry. The DFPD-HD provides rapid and reliable control of, for example, large volumes of supply and exhaust air or clear and wastewater.
High performance, high level of safety
This modular system offers powerful solutions for various applications in process automation. Available in three versions of max. 9,000, 18,000 and 32,000 Nm respectively, the quarter turn actuator DFPD-HD fits flexibly to applications. The single actuator’s standard clockwise rotating direction provides a high level of safety by ensuring that the media flow is interrupted automatically in case of a malfunction. Rotating direction can also be configured in anticlockwise , in which case the DFPD-HD will release the media flow if a malfunction occurs. This new high performer from Festo is also available in a double-acting version for even greater flexibility. This quarter turn actuator can be used in applications, where the Safety Integrity Level up to SIL3 is required.
Practical design
Thanks to its standard VDI/VDE 3845 interfaces, the quarter turn actuator DFPD-HD allows assembling of wide range external devices, such as sensor boxes or positioners. The DFPD-HD can be used at any ambient temperature between -20 and 80°C. Its spring force can be adapted for different applications by configuring various spring cartridges. A mechanical or hydraulic manual override provides additional safety. This allows the actuators to be operated manually in the case of a power breakdown.
Emphasis on safety
Pneumatic drives have three emergency functions in the event of a power failure – open, close and stop – and allow low operating pressures. They are ideal for use in areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere, in particular when explosion-proof valves, such as NAMUR valves with appropriate coils, are used and the valves or valve terminals are located outside the explosion-hazard zone. In these cases, the pneumatic drives in the explosion-hazard zone are supplied with compressed air via tubing, while the electrical control components can be installed in a non-hazardous zone. Pneumatic drives are ATEX-approved as standard up to zone 1.
