In an exclusive interview with Lucía Mejuto, Mining Development Manager at Aggreko, we learnt how this company is contributing to the decarbonization and sustainable energy generation in Argentina. Aggreko, which is a leading company in energy solutions, has carried out projects in various areas focused on offering remote energy where it is needed. The priority is always sustainability and the lowest environmental impact.

Sustainable Energy Generation in Argentina

With more than 300 megawatts installed in the country, Aggreko has focused its efforts on sustainable energy generation.

Lucía Mejuto stressed the fact that they do not consider themselves as energy suppliers, but rather as energy solution providers. Their main goal is to address global energy challenges by the provision of reliable and valuable alternatives with a focus on sustainability.

Diversity of Energy Sources

One of the main strategies of Aggreko is the use of a variety of energy sources to generate electricity.

“We always try to prevail the use of gas-fired generators where available, it is a much greener energy”, Lucía Mejuto said. The company also uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other energy sources in its developments.

She added that Aggreko has incorporated batteries into its approach to reduce diesel consumption by the displacement of the rotating reserve they generate. This has led to a significant decrease in the environmental impact of its projects.

Hybrid and Renewable Energy

Aggreko has committed itself to integrating renewable energy into its solutions. The mining development manager explained that new projects are being designed with a hybrid approach, combining backup power with generation through solar panels or wind turbines, depending on the site and specific needs.

These hybrid solutions make the system become more stable and allow greater penetration of renewable energy, which means a significant contribution to decarbonization.

Overcoming Challenges in a Country with Great Distances

Argentina is a vast and diverse country which implies that supplying energy to all customers is a challenge that has to be faced. She made a point of the fact that every project has unique characteristics, such as access difficulties, remote locations. And all this demands a personalized and customized approach to find the best solutions.

Sectors where Aggreko participates in the country.

Lucía explained that Aggreko works over three business areas: utilities, oil & gas and mining. But it particularly works in the mining sector, where they have three large plants in the south and we are now focused on the new energy development of Lithium.

Inclusion of Women in the Sector

Concerning the inclusion of women in the mining and energy sector, Lucía said that, although there is still a gender gap, steps are being taken towards the promotion of diversity. As a business development manager in the mining sector, Lucía is aware of this, that it is a position where there are not usually many women.

However, Aggreko has committed itself to the diversity issue and has become partners with WIM Argentina, which is a group of women in the mining industry that support each other and work to reach excellence in this market.

Looking to the Future

Aggreko has clear goals to accomplish for 2050 in its struggle for decarbonization and its moving forward to a cleaner and more sustainable energy. With a focus on mining and energy development for lithium, Aggreko is positioning itself as a leading company in the Argentine energy landscape.

The interview with Lucía Mejuto has made it clear the importance of developing sustainable and reliable energy solutions to address global environmental challenges and meet energy needs in a responsible way.

Aggreko is leading the way towards a cleaner and more sustainable future in Argentina and even beyond it.
